Managers of other liquid underlying investments - most obviously equities and bonds - are likely to be familiar with currency through their international investing activities.  There is often a client or marketing objective in offering hedged share classes; in such cases we are happy to offer our Hedging services on an expert and fiduciary basis.

Managers of funds that invest in illiquid assets - including real estate and private equity - may find that 'structural' routes to hedging - i.e. borrowing in the currency of the assets in which the fund intends to invest - are less readily available than was the case historically.  In addition such funds are also limited in their ability to enter into traditional hedging instruments - in particular forward foreign exchange contracts - due to uncertainty over their ability to meet cashflows as they fall due.  In such cases we can develop a long-dated currency hedging program that limits the maximum cash drawdown to levels agreed with the client in advance.
